First Book at BCC

First Book

What is First Book?

First Book is a nonprofit social enterprise that provides new, high-quality books and resources to any school or program that works with kids in need. Together with its partners in the publishing industry they're committed to help educators and community leaders rebuild their libraries.

In March of 2014, Burlington County College worked with First Book, the African American Chamber of Commerce and New Jersey's Secretary of Higher Education Rochelle Hendricks to bring 40,000 new quality books to children throughout New Jersey.

We are thrilled to announce that the program is returning for its second year and partnering with Mercer County Community College!

How to Get Free Books

First Book empowers educators with an unprecedented choice of high quality books and materials. Their resources help to:

  • Elevate the quality of literacy programs
  • Enrich the learning experience for children in need
  • Enable teachers to create new curricula
  • Impart a love of reading to children

Groups are eligible if they serve a large number of military, disabled or low-income children. Organizations that serve 70 percent of children that meet any combination of those criteria are qualified to sign up with First Book. Other groups serving a lower percentage will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you have questions about eligibility, click here.

Interested organizations are invited to visit firstbook.org/bcc to register for this program and determine eligibility.  The deadline to be included in the March 2015 distribution is January 30, 2015.  Programs that register after this deadline will be considered for future distributions only.  Programs that registered last year do not need to re-register.  The College will contact you in January 2015 to schedule book pick up times and discuss book quantity.

Groups that participate in BCC’s First Book initiative may receive solicitations from First Book. Under this BCC project, qualified groups do not have to purchase anything to receive their free books this spring.
