Released: 6/10/2009 5:42:17 PM
Burlington County College’s shortstop Matt Weaver (Browns Mills, NJ) was selected in the 9th round, 268th overall pick, in the Major League Baseball draft today.
Weaver will report to the Atlanta Braves rookie camp on June 13 in Orlando, FL as one of the team’s newest shortstops. The Braves developed a keen interest in Weaver during BCC’s spring trips to Orlando and then closely followed him throughout the season. His selection comes just after a pre-draft workout hosted by the Braves in late May.
Prior to the draft, Weaver’s talents were certainly noticed locally and regionally. In addition to playing shortstop, BCC also utilized Weaver as a closing pitcher. His stats earned him several honors including 1st Team All-American, 1st Team All-District, 1st Team All-Region 19 and 1st Team All-Garden State Athletic Conference.
Weaver is only the 2nd in the college’s history to be named Region 19 Player of the Year and only the 2nd to be named Northeast District Player of the Year. For a complete look at his statistics, visit www.bccbaronsbaseball.com.
Weaver’s talents were spotted early on by BCC coaches. Head coach, John Holt, recalls scouting Weaver while he was completing high school locally at Pemberton Township High School. “I saw Matt very early in his high school career and could see then that he was a special talent. He was a great addition to our program and continued a tradition of quality shortstops here at BCC.”
This is the highest draft selection to hail from BCC which is cause for much excitement. “It’s an exciting time for Matt and his family. All of us here at the college are thrilled to see him drafted and will certainly be tracking his success in the majors,” added Holt.
