Program Mission and Goals

The Mission

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program combines a strong science education, practical experience, and liberal arts education to prepare individuals for career in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and related fields or graduate study. Curricula provide individuals an opportunity to make significant contributions to the society, in general, and to the profession, in particular.


The Goals

The goals of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at Burlington County College are to:

  1. Provide students with integrated didactic, lab, and clinical education that will enable them to have a complete understanding of procedures.
  2. Train DMS students to become professional Sonographers, who will be ready to become a part of the health-care industry and who will perform their duties with knowledge, professionalism, and dedication to their patients and other health-care professionals.
  3. Provide students with a full range of sonographic examinations experiences necessary for them to enhance their scanning skills to produce a diagnostic examination in the following:
    • Abdominal
    • Non-cardiac chest
    • OB/GYN
    • Superficial structures
    • Vascular structures
  4. Develop the student into a productive participant of the health care team.
  5. Promote professionalism.

The program provides the graduate with the necessary theoretical and clinical background to function as an entry level Sonographer in a variety of health-care settings. Academic progression is facilitated by the design of the curriculum and transferability of credits into upper division health care education programs.
